Mountain Biking
Okay - if you want ripping and tearing on twisty trails and endless
logging roads you've come to the right place. Leave the cars behind
and discover the real back country of the Sunshine Coast - the mountains,
the creeks and wide open space that you can fly by.
Ride through forest trails that take you up mountains to spectacular
views, race along the logging roads that criss-cross all over the
coast or challenge yourself on the specially constructed expert
trails. We don't boast some of the best riders in Canada for nothing
- we have the terrain that improves your skill in both trail riding
and downhill descents - bring your armour.
The trails have been mapped and are, for the most part, well-marked
- almost all the trails are looped, which is a bonus when you're
exhausted at the end of your ride. The Angus Creek Loop starts just
down the road from Tranquility Bay. This twenty-two kilometre trail
is classed intermediate in terrain and gives you stunning overviews
of Mount Richardson, the Sechelt Inlet (part of the Inland Sea)
and the Caren Range.
Angus Creek Bike Loop
The trail is well marked and is a leisurely afternoon ride. Climbing
is moderate and you are rewarded with gorgeous views along the way.
The path weaves through the trees and crosses four creeks - this
is a great trail to cruise on - you can catch a good buzz on some
of the descents.
Mountain
biking is a big deal on the coast - there are seventeen officially
designated trails ranging from novice to expert and countless unofficial
routes. Everything you need, from bike parts to riding partners,
is available in the local bike shops and coffee bars. So think about
some great riding through old-growth forest, along the ocean and
those big climbs up the mountains - and when your riding's over
for the day you can do one last climb into a soothing hot tub. That's
the Tranquility Bay way to end every ride!
The
Sunshine Coast has beautiful, winding, paved roads for road riding.
We have many racers living among us, including Canadian champions,
and every year hundreds of cyclists make the Sunshine Coast their
destination for a riding vacation.
If you like the idea of a fast, exciting road ride through small
villages and forests this trip is it - our roads are full of long
flat stretches along the ocean and good workout climbs through the
trees. And you can't beat those long descents that go on forever.
From the ferry to Egmont is eighty kilometres of paved road. Most
of the road offers a paved shoulder and where there is no shoulder
the drivers are very accommodating. There is also a network of secondary
paved roads, looping out from the main road, that have almost no
traffic.
The road from Sechelt to Tranquility Bay is one such secondary
road. Bring your bike along or ride here right from the ferry -
our oceanfront location and hot tub provide a perfect ending to
a great ride.
Hiking Among The Giants
Old growth forest is protected in British Columbia's
many parks. We are very fortunate on the Sunshine Coast to have
many of our forests as living testimonials to the natural history
of the area.
While pictures may provide one with a sense of these
majestic trees, seeing them in their rain forest environment is
truly amazing.
The large provincial parks, like The Tetrahedron
and The Caren Range, and the smaller
parks including Cliff Gilker and Kinnikinnick,
are all wonderful hikes for anyone who enjoys being in 'the thick
of it'.
Hiking The Tetrahedron Trail
The Tetrahedron is BC's newest park and the biggest on the Sunshine
Coast. Covering 15,000 acres the park is a spectacular blend of
geographical variations. Ranging from 3,000-5,900 feet in elevation
above sea level, the park offers old-growth rain forest, coastal
mountains, large areas of open meadows, lakes, streams and wetlands.
A large community of wildlife such as bear, cougar, deer and mountain
goat, along with wild flowers and plants, make their home in The
Tet.
Wintertime
in The Tet
During the spring, summer and fall, hiking is the mode of transportation
along the Tetrahedron trails but in winter this park boasts the
only back-country cabin-to-cabin ski trail in BC's Coastal Mountains.
Four cabins are offered free of charge (including firewood which
is airlifted into the area) for skiers during the winter and hikers
during the cool fall months. Voluntary donations of $10 per person
per night for restocking of firewood and park maintenance are appreciated.
This area is rugged West Coast outdoors. While day hikes are easily
arranged, longer trips must be prepared for. The reward is to be
within an ecologically sensitive environment that is still under
nature's domain. The Tetrahedron Park is located just up a logging
road from Tranquility Bay. We can offer first-hand advice to help
you plan your journey.
